Mazor X Robotic Spine Surgery Lawsuit Attorneys

Mazor X Lawsuit Lawyers Helping Patients Injured During Robotic-Assisted Spine Surgery

Robotic guidance systems are medical devices marketed to spine surgeons as a way to place screws and implants more precisely. But when the software guiding the robot is wrong, the consequences for a patient can be serious and life-altering. Mazor X robotic spine surgery lawsuit attorneys investigate whether problems with robotic guidance contributed to misplaced screws or other hardware near the spinal cord or nerve roots, potentially causing nerve damage, chronic pain, weakness, or the need for another spinal operation.

In December 2025, Mazor Robotics initiated a recall of certain Mazor X robotic guidance systems after identifying software errors that can result in incorrect surgical instrument positioning during spinal surgery. The FDA posted the recall in January 2026. The recall covers 549 systems distributed nationwide in the United States and internationally.

The Anapol Weiss team is reviewing cases for patients who had spine surgery performed with a Mazor X system and later experienced complications, including misplaced hardware, nerve injury, or revision surgery. Anapol Weiss has decades of experience holding medical device manufacturers accountable for defective products, including the Zimmer NexGen knee implant and transvaginal mesh, and has recovered hundreds of millions of dollars on behalf of clients through these and other cases.

Who May Qualify for Help From Mazor X Robotic Spine Surgery Lawsuit Attorneys

You or a loved one may have a case if:

  • You had spinal surgery, such as a spinal fusion, that was performed with the help of a Mazor X robotic guidance system
  • Imaging after surgery showed that screws, rods, or other hardware were placed in the wrong position
  • You developed new or worsening nerve pain, numbness, weakness, or loss of function after surgery
  • You needed a second surgery to correct or remove misplaced hardware
  • Your surgeon or hospital told you about a problem with the robotic system used during your procedure

Not sure whether a robot was used in your surgery? Your operative report usually notes whether robotic guidance was used and which system. The Mazor X lawsuit lawyers at Anapol Weiss can help you request your records and review them to help determine your next steps.

About the Mazor X Robotic Guidance System

The Mazor X is a robotic guidance system used in spine surgery. Before the operation, the system uses a patient's imaging to create a surgical plan. During the procedure, it guides the surgeon's instruments to the planned positions for screws and other implants. Mazor Robotics is based in Caesarea, Israel, and has been part of Medtronic since 2018.

Because the surgeon relies on the robot to place instruments accurately, a software error can send an instrument to the wrong spot, sometimes mere millimeters from the spinal cord and sensitive nerve roots.

The 2025-2026 Mazor X Recall

On December 10, 2025, Mazor Robotics initiated a recall of certain Mazor X robotic guidance systems (Recall No. Z-1122-2026), which the FDA posted in January 2026. Key facts:

  • The recall was issued for software errors that can result in incorrect surgical instrument positioning during spinal surgery.
  • Affected systems run software versions 5.0.1, 5.1.2, and 5.1.3 (REF: TPL0059).
  • 549 systems were distributed nationwide in the U.S. and internationally.
  • Medtronic instructed affected facilities to notify physician users, retain the recall notice with the Mazor X system until the software update was completed, and continue using the system according to the user manual and specified mitigation instructions.

This is not the first Mazor X recall. In 2019, Mazor Robotics initiated a Class II recall of certain Snapshot Tracker Kits because they were not manufactured according to specifications and could potentially cause navigational inaccuracies that may result in patient injury.

In a separate 2019 action, Medtronic recalled certain Mazor X Surgical System Positioner Type II units because the system could unexpectedly detach from the operating-room table, potentially causing blunt injury to a patient.

Possible Complications of Misplaced Spinal Hardware

When screws or other hardware are placed in the wrong position during spine surgery, patients may experience:

  • Nerve root injury, causing pain, numbness, or weakness in the arms or legs
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Chronic back or neck pain
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Damage to nearby blood vessels
  • Failed fusion or hardware loosening
  • Revision surgery to remove or reposition hardware, with the added risks of another spine operation

How Mazor X Robotic Spine Surgery Lawsuit Attorneys Can Help

A lawsuit against a medical device manufacturer can help injured patients:

  • Recover lost wages and reduced earning capacity
  • Recover compensation for pain, suffering, and loss of quality of life
