EndDD: Social Media Apps Can Help Stop Distracted Drivers

By: Anapol Weiss

Statistics show that more than 10 people are killed and another 1,000+ are injured in auto collisions that involve distracted drivers each day. Teens are disproportionately affected with more than half of teen crashes believed to involve driving distractions.

Distracted driving isn’t limited to texting while driving. It also includes using social media apps while behind the wheel. In fact, a recent lawsuit alleges that an 18-year-old driver was traveling at more than 100 miles per hour and using Snapchat when she crashed into another car, seriously injuring another man.

In an effort to get social media companies to take a stand against distracted driving, Anapol Weiss Shareholder and EndDD.org co-founder Joel Feldman is teaming up with The Partnership for Distraction-Free Driving. Together they have launched a petition to encourage social media companies to do the following:

  • Incorporate a warning screen for their apps reminding drivers not to use the app when driving, or, as is the case with Waze have a message pop-up saying “Typing is disabled while driving. Please try again when stopped!”
  • Issue a public statement encouraging drivers not to use their apps while driving
  • Partner with highway safety advocates to develop responsible public policy discouraging the use of social media apps while driving

Distracted drivers are a traffic safety issue for everyone. We can all do our part to prevent crashes by committing not to use cell phones while driving for any reason – including social media.

You can also show your support by signing the petition. Working together we can reduce distracted driving and keep those we care about safe.
