Navigating a Camp Lejeune Case: What You Need to Know Before Time Runs Out

By: Shayna Slater, Anapol Weiss Partner

Camp LejeuneCamp Lejeune

Camp Lejeune, a United States Marine Corps base in North Carolina, has been at the center of one of the largest water contamination cases in U.S. history. For decades, thousands of Marines and their families were exposed to toxic chemicals. The consequences have been severe, with many suffering from various illnesses, including cancer and neurological disorders.

If you or a loved one has been affected by the contamination at Camp Lejeune, taking legal action is a necessary step to seek justice and compensation. However, time is running out, and understanding the urgency of the situation is crucial. It is essential to act swiftly to determine your eligibility and initiate the legal process.

The Statute of Limitations: August 9, 2024

The statute of limitations sets a time limit on how long an individual has to file a lawsuit. In the context of Camp Lejeune cases, all claims must be filed (or an Administrative claim submitted to the JAG) within 2 years after the enactment of the Camp Lejeune Justice Act. The Statute of Limitations on all Camp Lejeune claims expires on August 9, 2024.

As the statute of limitations is quickly approaching, the importance of taking action intensifies. In order to pursue a claim, evidence is crucial. This includes the following:

1. Medical records documenting your/your loved one’s injury/diagnosis.

2. Evidence of your/your loved one’s time spent on Camp Lejeune. This may include housing records, military orders, record of service, DD214, etc.

3. If you are pursuing a claim on behalf of a deceased individual, an estate must be opened with an appointed representative.

Once we have the appropriate documentation, a JAG Administrative form must be submitted by the August 9, 2024, statute.

Navigating a Camp Lejeune case can be complex, involving various legal intricacies and

By understanding the urgency of the situation, seeking appropriate legal guidance promptly, and taking swift action, you can navigate the complexities of the legal system and work towards obtaining the compensation and closure you deserve before it is too late.
