This year marks a significant milestone with the 30th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), enacted in 1994 with bipartisan support as part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act.
VAWA was groundbreaking legislation that empowered the justice system with policies, training, and resources to confront domestic violence—a crime that for too long was viewed as a private issue and left unaddressed. With four revisions since its inception, VAWA continues to evolve, providing increased support and protection for victims.
As a woman, a mother of daughters, and a legal advocate, I recognize the strides made possible through VAWA’s enactment and subsequent revisions. But how is it that such a law has only existed for three decades?
Statistics from the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence reveal that one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime, a grim reality that underscores the need for continuous advocacy. Yet, misconceptions remain. The notion of “Why doesn’t she just leave?” persists, reflecting a profound misunderstanding of the complexities of domestic abuse. Leaving is often met with escalated violence—sometimes fatal—showcasing the grave danger victims face when attempting to break free.

By addressing these misconceptions, we aim to reshape what has traditionally been considered a “private matter” into a recognized, public concern that requires collective action.
